Testaccio is the name of the 20th rione of Rome. The name derives from the so-called "monte" (mons Testaceus): 35 metres of cocci (testae) and miscellaneous debris accumulated over the centuries as transport compound that they head to the port of Ripa grande (Emporium).
The port of Emporio functioned since Roman times, and was the landing point for goods and raw materials (mainly wheat, wine, marbles) that arrived by sea from the port of Ostia, dated the Tiber on towed barges from Buffalo who in 1842 were replaced with steam-trailers.
Over the centuries the shards of amphorae, which were used to store grain and liquid foods during transportation, accumulated in montagnola: hence the old name of monte Testaccio or Monte dei cocci, and choice-the amphora-like symbol of the ward. The number of amphorae stacked it is estimated at around 25 million. Empty amphorae that had contained oil were primarily routes crocks then arranged neatly to provide stability in step pyramid and sprinkled with lime.
The restaurants are all typical of Roman cuisine are all must-sees (Bucatino in Via Luca della Robbia, Lo Scopettaro Lungotevere Testaccio, by Felice Via Oio Mastrogiorgio, at my home in Via Galvani, Agustarello Via 100, Branch from Checchino in Via Monte Testaccio 30 or art or part in Via Luca della Robbia, Torricella in Via Torricelli, The bottling plant in Franklin Street Tavern, Osteria degli Amici in Via Zagaglia, etc) not to be missed are also pizzerias (from Remo to Piazza s.Maria Liberatrice where row reach tens of meters, a new world in Via Vespucci, Antico Forno Marucci in palazzo and filled with tourists, Cantinone Piazza Testaccio) and if you want to enjoy the real pizza to take away you should definitely try one of Pizzettiere in Piazza s.Maria Liberatrice and Farinando in Via Luca della Robbia.
